African Diaspora Participates in March on Washington 50th Anniversary

Dr. Sylvester Okere, Executive Director of the Continental Africa Leadership Forum (pictured with Dr. Martin Luther King Jnr. III) joined a roster of speakers last Saturday (August 24th) at the Lincoln Memorial to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington. He spoke on behalf of the African immigrant community in the United States and stressed the importance of fixing America’s broken immigration system.

Fifty years later, U.S. marchers urge fulfillment of King's 'dream

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Tens of thousands of marchers converged on Washington on Saturday to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I have a dream" speech and to urge action on jobs, voting rights and gun violence.

"We believe in a new America. It's time to march for a new America," civil rights leader Al Sharpton told the predominantly black crowd from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.

Thousands Rally on 50th Anniversary of MLK’s ‘I Have a Dream’ Speech

WASHINGTON — Four days shy of the 50th anniversary of the historic 1963 March on Washington, thousands rallied in the capitol once more on Saturday to continue the fight for justice and equality in America.

Throughout the day at the “National Action to Realize the Dream” rally, activists, leaders and icons in the realms civil rights, women’s rights, labor, and LGBT rights addressed the crowd from a podium at the Lincoln Memorial, the same spot where Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his historic “I Have a Dream” speech 50 years ago.

President Cabrera, S-CAR Speakers Featured in Commemorative March on Washington

Faculty members, graduates, and students of George Mason University’s School for Conflict Analysis and Resolution (S-CAR) will be among the speakers during the 50th anniversary commemoration of  the “March on Washington” when Martin Luther King Jr. gave his famous “I Have a Dream” speech. George Mason president Ángel Cabrera will lead Mason’s contingent of eight speakers during the National Action to Realize the Dream 2013 at the Lincoln Memorial on Saturday, Aug. 24, beginning at 8 a.m.

Union leaders among LGBT speakers at MLK rally

Union leaders Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, and Mary Kay Henry, president of the Service Employees International Union, both out lesbians, will be among at least four LGBT rights advocates to speak on Saturday at the 50th anniversary commemoration of the 1963 Civil Rights March on Washington.

National Action to Realize the Dream 2013: 50th Anniversary March on Washington

The 50th anniversary of the March on Washington social action campaign is an initiative that commemorates the 1963 march and calls attention to the work that still remains to be done 50 years on in 2013. Its vision is to establish a coalition of organizations who are committed to “a renewed fight,” and a sustained effort ensuring that previous gains survive the current attempt by some to roll them back and to press for new gains that help the United States of America “lives up to the true meaning of its creed.”
